Freedom & Truth, for mezzo or soprano, violin, and optional wooden spoons, 4’30″

Text by Margaret Fuller.
Commissioned by BeaconArts and the City of Beacon.
Premiered May 21, 2016, at Beacon Visitors Center, Beacon, NY.

Freedom & Truth, with its text by Margaret Fuller, discusses the important relationship of these two ideals. It is part of a growing cycle of songs entitled We Hold These Truths.  Other songs in the cycle include The New Colossus, a setting of the inscription on the Statue of Liberty, with text by Emma Lazarus. Both poems were written at a time when the very fact of being a woman writer was taboo, yet the strength of their words still rings true today. The third song in the cycle examines a Biblical phrase co-opted during the early days of women’s struggle for equal rights – “Give her the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates.”  The cycle will soon include its namesake, a setting of a portion of the Declaration of Independence, We Hold These Truths.
