Commissioned by Alaria, Amy Kimball, violin; Arthur Cook, cello; Marcia Eckert, piano.
Finding Accord is about the art of relationship, of riding through differences and disagreements and finding accord. As such, it is also a commentary on the art of chamber music-making itself.
The music begins with casual conversation, airing many sides of the opening theme as each voice of the three voices speaks its mind and the others respond. Familiar conversation evolves to defiance with the violinist stomping a beat with ankle bells and the piano strings jangling under the heavy glass that’s on its strings. We enter a ghostly interlude and remembered tenderness before the bottom falls out and disintegrates into spontaneous improvisation of light percussive sounds from piano and strings. The music reaches an impasse, a “now what!” moment of uncertainty, random sounds yield to a comforting rocking motion, and a recap of memories, coming to rest with the ever-returning bass line of a passacaglia.
