Premiered at Saint Peter’s Church/Citigroup, New York, NY.
I began work on Duet After Winter on the day of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011. My boyfriend and I were estranged at the time when I got an email from him that said, “I’m ok.”
I’d forgotten he would be giving a reading in Yokohama that week. I felt a tug at my heartstrings and began sketching. I chose the violin duo to convey the close relationship of soul touching soul.
The two voices begin in unison, dovetail and harmonize, responding to the same themes, but never in quite the same place at the same time. I thought that the piece would end that way…but he and I had resumed communication, and the course of things changed, as did the ending of the piece. The violins come back into duet and cadence as they had begun, in unison.
