Chain Reaction, for soprano and piano, 4’30” (2008)

Commissioned by Nancy Ogle, University of Maine.
Premiered at the University of Maine, Fulbright Ceremony – Facing Environmental Challenges.
Text by Debra Kaye.

I wrote the text for Chain Reaction in 2006, what I called “the glory days of global warming” when people could more easily enjoy the warmth of a November day and put aside the worries associated with it. The song expresses concern, and asks what one person can do. It finds an answer in simple daily acts, and the important effect we can have on others without even realizing it. Joni Mitchell, meets cabaret and art song, with a touch of drama queen thrown in, Chain Reaction, written in 2008, remains ultimately hopeful.
