If this were a story – loss and regeneration would be the themes. I wrote it while grieving my father. My process was largely intuitive, the first motif that came to mind became the basis for the piece, the solo sax rising and falling like a breath. While working on the second movement, a long-forgotten tune dropped into the sax line. My Dad used to whistle it when he called us in from play (a rhythmic descending minor 3rd). It appears at the end of the movement, now as a way of saying goodbye. The incarnate dissolves into the ethereal, a heart-beat pizzicato becomes a time-ticking drum beat and resolves into an easy bossa nova. I hope And So It Begins takes the listener on an emotional and life-affirming journey.
