a deafening silence – an elegy, for flute and piano, 5’30” (2020)

Commissioned by Carl Gutowski.
Will be premiered at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Date TBA; Carl Gutowski, flute, Toshiko Jones, piano.

a deafening silence – an elegy is a remembrance of a beloved older brother. His death at the age of 30 was a sudden tragedy for the family and all who knew him. A low piano tone merges with harmonics from the string, flute enters on an alarming high note, tumbling down to a breathy whisper over the decaying piano sound. A pulsing section emerges, remembering him as he was, an energetic, creative force. The piece ends in what I think of as a song of remembrance, embracing the beautiful sadness of a life cut short.
